High-resolution human mobility data reveal race and wealth disparities in disaster evacuation patterns

چکیده
Abstract Major disasters such as extreme weather events can magnify and exacerbate pre-existing social disparities, with disadvantaged populations bearing disproportionate costs. Despite the implications for equity emergency planning, we lack a quantitative understanding of how these fault lines translate to different behaviours in large-scale contexts. Here investigate this problem context Hurricane Harvey, using over 30 million anonymized GPS records from 150,000 opted-in users Greater Houston Area quantify patterns disaster-inflicted relocation activities before, during, after shock. We show that evacuation distance is highly homogenous across individuals types neighbourhoods classified by race wealth, obeying truncated power-law distribution. Yet here similarities end: find both wealth strongly impact patterns, minority less likely evacuate than wealthier white residents. Finally, there are considerable discrepancies terms departure return times strong cohesion among evacuees advantaged their destination choices. These empirical findings bring new insights into mobility evacuations, providing policy recommendations residents, decision-makers, disaster managers alike.

Understanding Temporal Human Mobility Patterns in a City by Mobile Cellular Data Mining, Case Study: Tehran City
Recent studies have shown that urban complex behaviors like human mobility should be examined by newer and smarter methods. The ubiquitous use of mobile phones and other smart communication devices helps us use a bigger amount of data that can be browsed by the hours of the day, the days of the week, geographic area, meteorological conditions, and so on. In this article, mobile cellular data mi...
متن کاملHigh-Resolution Temporal Response Patterns to Influenza Vaccine Reveal a Distinct Human Plasma Cell Gene Signature
To identify sources of inter-subject variation in vaccine responses, we performed high-frequency sampling of human peripheral blood cells post-vaccination, followed by a novel systems biology analysis. Functional principal component analysis was used to examine time varying B cell vaccine responses. In subjects vaccinated within the previous three years, 90% of transcriptome variation was expla...
متن کاملWomen, Wealth, and Mobility
The extent of and changes in inter-generational mobility of wealth are central to understanding dynamics of wealth inequality but hard to measure. Using estate tax returns data, we observe that the share of women among the very wealthy (top 0.01%) in the United States peaked in the late 1960s, reaching almost 50%. Three decades on, women’s share had declined to one third, a return to pre-war le...
متن کاملPeriodic patterns in human mobility
The recent rise of services and networks that rely on human mobility has prompted the need for tools that detect our patterns of visits to locations and encounters with other individuals. The widespread popularity of locationand encounter-aware mobile phones has given us a wealth of empirical mobility data and enabled many novel applications that benefit from automated detection of an individua...
متن کاملHigh-resolution ion mobility measurements
Gas phase ion mobility measurements can resolve structural isomers for polyatomic ions and provide information about their geometries. A new experimental apparatus for performing high-resolution ion mobility measurements is described. The apparatus consists of a pulsed laser vaporization/desorption source coupled through an ion gate to a 63-cm-long drift tube. The ion gate is a critical compone...
